The growth in universities offering online degrees in addition to their on campus degrees has been exponential over the last few years. As high speed internet connections now allow for video lectures and class discussions online educational programs have come into their own right, making education truly accessible on the student’s terms.
Students can now take classes from the convenience of their home while still attending full time employment. As the students gain valuable knowledge their employers reap the benefits and they see the value of on online education. Some employers even pay for their employee's tuition if the courses are relevant to their work.
As more traditional brick and mortar colleges and universities offer online degree programs the acceptance of online undergraduate degrees, and graduate degrees as legitimate credentials by employers and educational institutions is growing. And there are many more traditional brick and mortar universities that have added online education into their strategic plan for offering courses over the internet.
Employers themselves, having little spare time, choose online education as a more convenient way of improving their net worth. A fellow student dropped his classes in the Bachelor of Commerce program that I was attending because he had his own painting company with employees and after the first week he realized that going to school full time took too much from his successfully business. He changed his courses and enrolled into the online program, allowing him to grow his business at the same time.
I remember him weighing the pros and cons of attending university full time and in the end his six figure salary from his painting business won out. Why should he jeopardize his business when he could study from home.
